Starting an online business can be a daunting experience in and of itself. Things get even more complicated when the time comes for promotion and advertising. Online marketing can be difficult and a bit discouraging to anyone that has never marketed online or to anyone who has only done offline marketing. Before you give up on line marketing and promoting your business online there are a few search engine optimization techniques that can help you spread the word about your business.
The first thing you should do is pick out the best domain name available. Even though the design and layout of your website will impact the success of your venture a good domain name could do more for your online business than anything else. Choose a domain name that is relevant to the products or services that you are promoting. The domain should be short, easy to remember, and something that relates directly to what you are doing. People should not visit your domain name and find themselves wondering what the domain name has to do with the business they are looking at.
Making your website easy to navigate will also encourage search engines to spider your website and make it easier for visitors to view your websites content. Including page titles in your websites navigation and links to your main domain name will help increase your websites search engine ranking and popularity. Easy website navigation is something that many website owners overlook when they are focused on designing a high tech website.
Choosing keywords that are not popular is another way to increase your search engine ranking while marketing your website online. Keywords help determine your search engine ranking and many major websites spend thousands on pay per click programs to get their websites in the top ranking for many popular keywords. Rather than waste time, money, and energy hoping your website is viewed for popular keywords stick to the keywords and keyword phrases that are not that popular with consumers. As long as they are directly related to your websites content you should be able to benefit from them. If you are determined to use popular keywords try to use common misspellings of the keywords in your websites Meta tags. Misspelled keywords can help improve your websites search engine ranking and traffic.
Invest in quality content that will interest your visitors. It is important to keep your visitors on your website as long as possible to help increase your reputation and improve your chances of making a sale. High quality content will also improve your search engine rankings. Spend time creating high quality content that is relevant to your websites keyword and existing content. This alone will help your search engine ranking improve.
Another way to market your website online while improving your search engine ranking is to update your websites content on a regular basis. Try to update your website once or twice a week with relevant content that will interest your visitors and search engines. If you are not sure what type of content will be acceptable or popular visit the websites of companies with similar products that are higher ranking than your own website. This will help you get ideas of the type of content format that the search engines and visitors like to see.
Honest online marketing is another way to promote your online business and improve your search engine ranking. It can be tempting to exaggerate about the contents of your website especially if it is a new website that is not receiving a lot of traffic. Instead of creating a catchy advertising campaign that is designed to attract the search engines but does not relate to your business be informative and honest. Driving traffic to your website doesn’t mean a thing if they leave in disgust as soon as they get there. It is important that you let visitors and search engines know what your website has to offer so that your website always appears in the most appropriate search results and attracts visitors with a genuine interest in your message and offers.
Take advantage of online press release and news release websites. A good press release can turn your small website into an overnight sensation if it is written correctly and distributed to a large audience. Most online press release websites are free or affordably priced and will get your press release to thousands of curious media representatives all over the world. If you are not comfortable with writing or have no experience with writing a press release does not despair. There are plenty of online sites that offer free press release templates that are easy to customize for distribution.
Being professional is another online marketing method that many people do not recognize as being important. Communicating with potential customers and talking with other website owners in a professional manner will help boost your reputation and spread the word about your website all over the Internet. This will open you and your website up to many new opportunities including link exchanges and increased traffic through a growth of Internet popularity.
Taking advantage of free article website directories and classified websites are another way to promote your website online while helping improve your search engine ranking. There are many free article websites that let website owners submit articles that include links to their website. These articles are then placed on the websites of others who have content which is similar to your topic and the website owners are required to keep your link in tact. This method not only helps share your website with the world, it also helps increase the number of natural backlinks that point to your website. Classified websites are another way to promote your website to business owners that might benefit from your knowledge and individuals who are searching for the information that your website provides.
Last, do not be afraid to outsource some work to experienced companies. Search engine optimization and online marketing is not for everyone and sometimes you can benefit from having a professional handle your search engine optimization and marketing. This outside help will give you the opportunity to focus on building your business which will also help you increases for success and prosperity in the future.

Hey do you think its worthwhile to get a professional seo company to perform the seo work for us. Or to just learn it like you and implement the strategies ourselves?
its much better to do it yourself because it can save you a couple thousand dollars

Thanks for an excellent post there! The one thing that stands out for me as being of paramount importance is to remember to be professional. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been looking for someone to hire only to have applicants send me typo-ridden messages. It’s a very poor reflection on the individual in my eyes. No matter how experienced they are, that puts me off them right away. All the SEO advice in the world can’t help you if you can’t communicate effectively with clients once they get in touch.
On the question of whether hiring a professional company is a good idea, I’m kind of on the fence. If learning is something you don’t have the time or energy to do, then it’s not bad as a short term solution. In the long run however, I feel you do yourself no favors in not at least getting some of the basic knowledge under your belt.
I have to agree with salwa – it’s not only more cost effective but also it means you’re not at the mercy of a professional who may or may not be keeping up to date with the current SEO trends. Knowledge is power.
Having a good layout is a valid point too and not just for the spiders either. It’s amazing how many sites put an enormous amount of effort into presentation, only to have no Contact Us/Me option anywhere. You’ll start looking now I’ve mentioned it and notice that, I bet. Good post!
Thanks for a good read. Remember back when you thought choosing a domain name was the easy bit and it’d be there waiting for you when you went to register it? Ahh, those days of innocence LOL. I hadn’t done that for a long time and sat down to try come up with one recently and every brainwave I had was taken. I gave up due to lack of inspiration after a few hours.
I don’t know what current thinking is but last I heard it’s better to choose a short one with ideally just initials or two or three syllables. Any views on that side of it? I think you’re right in what you say there and imho as long as it’s memorable, that’s the main thing.
