Five Things You Should Know Before You Start Blogging

There are a lot of things to consider before you start blogging. Oftentimes, people think that a blogger’s life is easy and free from responsibility. Some would even go to the extent of opening a blog just to publicize themselves. In order to dissimulate this growing stigma, here are five things you should know before you start blogging:

1. Why Blog?

This question may sound superficial to budding writers, but it is not something rhetorical. Every blogger or writer, at that, should have a purpose. It is best to know what message you want to deliver to your readers. More often than not, most bloggers are creating their own web space to add to their growing cyber clutter. Since the hype of web profiles such as MySpace, Facebook and Friendster, blogging has been no different to the eye of mainstream web surfers. A good percentage of blogs have been left inactive by their authors, simply because the site did not have any goal from the very start.

2. Time and Effort

What makes blogging a lucrative pastime is your dedication and passion for writing. A blogger must first have the time and commitment in starting up a website built up for consistency. In order to keep your blog growing, you need to incessantly add more and more content. This also needs a lot of effort and keenness from the author. Nowadays, most bloggers make the most of the technology of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). By creating traffic to your web log, you also get a chance to earn as you add more entries.

3. Market

An integral part of writing is knowing who your target market is. You have to know who your readers will be. Oftentimes, being random is not always good. A website that is thematic and direct has a better chance of reaching hordes of followers than one that plucks topics from a dustbin. By knowing your readers, virtual relationships can be made as foundation for a stronger publicity.

4. Public Spotlight

Once a blog is created, you cannot control the possibility of getting a lot of public attention. Even television series such as “Gossip Girl” have highlighted the consequences of putting yourself in media spotlight. Being a blogger carries a lot of accountability not only for yourself as the author, but to your avid readers. Any wrong word or entry can result to a serious corollary. Since the time blogging has become a mainstream phenomenon, rash authors have faced legal cases involving liability and defamation.

5. Fun

A blogger’s work is not serious. It always helps to have a sense of humor as you write. No one wants to read through a bucket of tears and sentimental nonsense. Be positive in everything you write. Most readers would want to have a kick in the stomach. If you go back to tip #3, you will learn that a blog is not a blog without you pleasing your readers. You can experiment with the many functions of media available for your reader’s entertainment. Have fun while writing and make the most out of the “space” that is given.

I’d like to also say that blogging is very fun especially when you have people subscribe to your feed just because they like what you have to say. Money is also another cool option but isn’t the number priority like most people make it out to be.

I think many fail because they never answer #1 to themselves. It never even occurs to them.

      Dennis,

Thanks for your input and you are actually right. Many start blogging with the wrong purpose and when they realise their mistake its sometime too late and a huge waste of time and money.

  4. Sire from WassupBlog says:

I reckon that although many may start a blog without paying attention to rule number one, some, relatively few perhaps, will develop a passion for blogging and these will survive, the rest remain as cosmic rubbish polluting cyberspace.

It certainly takes a lot of time and effort and if you don’t have fun or at least enjoy what your doing you will sooner or later add to the garbage that the rest of us has to wade through. ;)

Number three really speaks to me. When I first started blogging, I had a different reader in mind than those who actually visit and comment on my blog. It’s something I’m still trying to nail down even after eight months…

      carla,

I think i am in the same shoes as you. For the past few months I have been putting so much effort in really getting to know my readers. What they want to see?, what they don’t like? And all this has really helped me maintaining this blog, the right way.

I think there’s still room out there for the journal-style blogs that are “just because.” But, yes, for anyone who intends to create a professional blog (whether professional in the vein of making money or sharing a passion to a large audience in order to teach and/or gain recognition), this is a great list to read.

    Salwa,

These sound like five common sense points to me.

I only wish that I had the type of challenges which you refer to in point number four!

With respect to point number five, whilst I can see your point and I feel that a little humor and a general positive feel is important, I do not feel that people should shy away from sharing negative thoughts, feelings or emotions.

This is especially the case for those whose blog represents more of a personal online diary.

That said, I do see your point and I feel that most blogs should try to provide an uplifting experience for their readers.

      Andrew,

Thanks for your comment. I see what you saying and to me I think it all depend with what kind of blog you have. Like you said this is especially the case for those whos blog represents more of a personal one rather than something else.

These points must be read by people who thinks that blogging is easy. The points discussed here gave almost all the basic concept a blogger must have in mind. Those blog admins who leave and decided to discontinue to update their blogs, are those who doesn’t know these points before they established their blogs. This is a very good starting point indeed. Very GOod Post. Thanks.
