Article marketing is, simply put, powerful stuff. Many internet marketers make the majority of their income from article marketing, and pretty much every marketer out there earns a portion of their income from it. If you are an affiliate marketer, internet marketer, or own an online-based business, you really should be taking advantage of article marketing.
For those who don’t know, article marketing is essentially creating an article with your link at the bottom, and allowing that article to be distributed for free. This allows a single article to be potentially distributed to hundreds, even thousands of sites, all with your link. Of course it doesn’t always work out like that, but it is definitely a good source of traffic.
If you are interested in getting in to article marketing, be sure to check out the tips below:
Use article directories.
Article directories are by far the #1 source for article distribution, and therefore, article marketing. A single high quality article submitted to a popular directory such as EzineArticles can potentially produce 1000’s of visitors to your site. Some popular article directories are: ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, and articledashboard.com.
If you opt to use article directories for your distribution needs, be sure to make a great resource box. The resource box is just as important, if not more important, than the article itself. You could have an excellent article, but if your resource box doesn’t inspire people to click thru, your efforts will be wasted. You should always, always have a call to action in your resource box. A call to action is simply a sentence or two that tells or asks people to do something. For instance, something like “Visit www.example.com to find out more about this product, and make a purchase if interested” is a call to action. A resource box without a call to action will not bring good results, even if it is well-written.
Write high quality articles.
If you plan to succeed in article marketing, you need to take the time to write a high quality article. Take the time to spell correctly, format the post so it is easy to read, and make the content original and interesting. With so many people submitting articles, the people who use the articles can afford to be picky about the articles they choose, and poorly written articles are often thrown by the wayside, and left unused and serving no purpose.
Write non-generic articles.
There are millions of people out there, most of which are pedaling the same old products. In a world of re-written content, you need to write fresh, non-generic articles if you plan to have your work distributed. Try to write on small niches, localized niches, or something like that. Stay away from very generic stuff, such as product reviews, general informational articles, etc, and never, EVER, re-write an existing article and expect to see results.
Write list/blog-style articles.
List or blog-style articles are very popular, and more people are looking for them than any other type of article. A list style article is something like “Top 5 Dresses of 2008″, and includes a simple numbered or bulleted list, with a description for each item. A blog style article is just like the one you are reading now. A title, introduction, and several small sub-headings, which are usually in bold, italic or some font that makes them stand out. These articles are popular because they can be skimmed through easily, but still contain a lot of information.
Write how-to articles.
How-to articles are also wildly popular, mainly because so many people search the web for things like “how do I do ___” or “how can I improve ____” or something similar. How-to articles are not hard to write, and from my own personal experience I can say that they bring much better results than normal articles. So, if you are promoting, let’s say a web design company, write an article entitled “how to build a website in just a few hours” or something similar. Write an article explaining in simple, easy-to-follow steps, how to build a website quickly. Then, in the resource box, put something like “if you are going for a more professional look for your website, please visit yourURL.com”, or something similar.

Hi Salwa,
Not all your efforts will be wasted when nobody hits your links to your site. Direct traffic from those directories it is not the only benefit from article marketing.
You also get High Quality Backlink from those sites, this can help you to crawl your way up into the serps and maybe with some luck to the first page with the keyword your targeted.
I really think this is a very powerful technique to increase traffic.

Regie,
You welcome. Glad I could help
Hey Salwa,
Just when I thought I would discard this “article marketing” thing altogether, you come up with this well-written piece. Well, what now? Go back to the word processor and churn out articles for “article marketing”. Agreed that lists and “How-to” articles are popular.
But like you suggested, it’s very important to think out of the box and come up with fresh content.
Hi Ashwin,
lol, yes please go back to it, you won’t be dissapointed
Good article, but even better re-design. Nice new look.
Hi Smashill,
Thank you, and glad you liked my new look.
Hi Salwa,
I’m not sure that I fully understand. Can I just clarify something?
Is article marketing appropriate only for those who are actually attempting to sell specific products or merchandise online? Or can it be used by bloggers as simply a strategy to generate blog traffic?
Hi Andrew,
Thanks for your question and no it is not just appropriate only for those who are trying to sell a specific product or service online. It can also be used by anyone who just needs traffic to either their website or blog.
Salwa
The exact opposite. Article directories (legit ones) deeply frown on sale style articles and never allow links of that nature in the body of the post….some like ezine articles don’t even allow affiliate links in the bio section.

I agree with you that many people start to search by using “how to”. Very common. =)
yeah that right, its very common!
Great post, how to posts are good cause you are solving a problem.
Lists are useful too
Hi James,
Yeah lists are very useful and tend to catch people’s attention.
Wow. Thanks for sharing this Salwa. Now I can do more to earn more. Thanks!
Btw, this is the first time I heard all about this article marketing thing. lol.

It is a great marketing technique. I will write more articles on this so stay tuned!
HowTo’s and lists always have been and always will be on the top of the heap, how ever you need to be extra careful not to be generic with those…it’s easy to do.
Dennis Edells last blog post..100 Marketers Give 100 Strategies – Recommended!
Dennis,
You are right, one has to be careful not to be generic/related to.
I plan to use article marketing to help niche sites I’m putting out there. EzineArticles allows three separate resource boxes but I think it’s better to go elsewhere for those type of articles (for me) and keep EzineArticles as my primary for internet marketing related articles.
Brian D. Hawkinss last blog post..Valuable Article Marketing Training by EzineArticles.com – Free!
Brian,
The only article directory I have used so far is EzineArticles, but you are right, for other related topic articles it is better to go elsewhere for more targeted audience of those niches.
Hi..
Very interesting and useful tips on article marketing. You can get more traffic with the help of it.Its really a powerful technique..
Marc Lohan,
Powerful technique indeed. I have just started my article marketing campaign and so far so good, so yeh it does really works! As Luis said above, just having your link on such websites is already an advantage to you.
Hi Salwa, great recommendations, great discussion. I’ve had some success with article marketing on Ezine. It’s led to a couple inquiries that turned into good clients, people who would not have found me easily in other ways.

Yes I know what you mean. I have just started my article marketing campaign using EzineArticles and so far so good.
Thanks for taking time to comment, appreciated!
Great article, I have been considering trying article marketing. I have read that you should never submit an article that is already on your site, to keep google for penalizing for duplicate content, is that correct?
Love the blog design here!

Eve,
Welcome to blogriffic, and thanks for your comment. Appreciated!
As to your question, this is a debate that has been going on in the blogosphere. Some say it’s ok, other (mijority) say no it’s not. But for me I always go with “better be safe than sorry” so I would avoid submitting an article at ezine that I already have on my website.
Hi. I just started blogging a couple of months ago, and would like to eventually submit articles as well. Thank you for sharing some great ideas!

Yup, even if you don’t get the right traffic you were hoping for, just having your link to such directories is a win, win situation
I haven’t been able to take advantage of this because English is only a second language for me. I am looking for article rewriter so that I could submit an article on directories. Do you have any suggestions?

They are many good article rewriters available online. I heveant actually worked with any so I won’t be able to recommend anyone but If you just do a little google search with your keyword “article rewriters”. I am sure you will get some nice results.

Melody,
Thank you! Glad you like it
Great article about the benefits of article marketing. I have made this a part of my daily ritual and submit at least 1 article a day and usually about 2 or 3.. I usually only submit to ezine and go articles and forget the rest. My thought is I would rather spend the time creating a new article to submit to ezine than spending that time submitting to inferior directories. I am sure some would argue against that but it works for me
In response to @PaulU (and forgive the sales pitch) I run a content writing company and a large chunck of my business in writin and rewriting articles for submission to article directories. Please note, we write the article, but do not submit. The only directories we will submit to are ezine and go. If interested you can check out my site at http://juicycontent.com
