Making Yourself Identifiable In The Blogging Community

This is a guest post by Simon, a 15 year old blogger from the UK that runs Teenius.com. You can follow him on Twitter @teenius

The internet is a big place, and by that I mean REALLY big. As a webmaster or blogger, one of the most important things you can do is get recognised by other internet users and hopefully get really popular. This article will discuss different tips and methods you can use to help get yourself recognised.

Probably the most important part of getting yourself recognised is making yourself identifiable from the other thousands of bloggers out there. To do this, you not only need to make yourself different, but also your blog, and you should build on connecting yourself to your blog.

Changes you should make to your blog

There are a few changes you should make to your blog (and your blogging lifestyle) to make you stand out more and get recognised quicker:

Go guest posting – If you’re looking to get yourself known, you should consider guest posting. This is where you go and do a post on someone else’s blog (like this one) in exchange for recognition that you wrote the article. You should do this as it means your articles are being read by more people, and if they enjoyed it they might go on your blog and become a loyal reader.

Have a unique selling point – This will usually be in the form of a slogan, but is basically a short line that sums up your blog and says what’s unique about it. By marketing this, people know what makes your blog special before they’ve even clicked on it.

Changes to make to yourself

Yes, that’s right. If you want to see a serious difference in how much you’re recognised, you will need to change your ways (if you haven’t already) to make it easier to market yourself:

Use a gravatar – When you go and comment on other people’s blogs (which you’ll need to do to get recognised), you should use a custom gravatar to make yourself distinguishable from the other commentators.

Your name – Staying on the commentating theme, you need to change your name. No, I’m not on about calling yourself Ronald McDonald, infact, it’s a lot simpler than that. When you comment, you need to make yourself associated with your website. The format I recommend is ‘Your Name | Your Website Name’. This works really well for me (Simon | Teenius), and people know I own Teenius.

Be kind – OK, sorry, I know you’re already all very nice people, but you need to be even nicer. Help fellow bloggers out, and do it publically. By doing this, you not only get a reputation as a cool person, you also show that you know what you’re talking about.

There are plenty more things I could go on about, but I think these are the essential points that should be followed by every blogger.

  2. Interesting post! Internet marketing is growing slowly in the IT industry but there is a good scope in it. Good luck to this new field.

    nice tips, salwa.

and I think the most effective step is by doing guest posting =D

  4. Sanya from China Travel says:

I thin it is also important to make sure that you say something useful and new when making comments. I have visited some blogs mainly because the commenter say something unique/sensible/new. If you say something useful other readers surely visit your blog to find out more about you.

The most attractive for me is writing guest post. First I used to think that one should write on his/her blog and why to write on other blogs. But no, now I think that writing guest posts on popular blogs makes u more popular than writing on your own blog.

    • Yup, when I first started I had the same thoughts.. I mean, why would I give my content away for free? Then I realised the potential of guest posting and I’ve done quite a few since then, and it’s definately a great way of getting loyal readers and getting yourself known.

  6. Nice article Simon, and I agree with you, there’s a lot of benefits by making yourself identifiable in the blogging community, and on many other levels than purely business related.

This is why it’s important not just to seek links with other websites, but rather seeking links with people.

    • I love the last line of your comment – really sums up making money online for me.

It just looks so bad when people are purely in it for their site. I think once you learn to accept it’s not all about the traffic, you’re a lot more likely to succeed :)

There are so many blogs out there, it can be hard to stand out. You provided some great tips for bloggers who want to be the next John Chow in their own way. Looking forward to seeing what type of blogging ‘celebrity’ you are! Good luck!

I love your point about being kind, Simon! All too often people are so negative, it becomes a real drag. I think I would add that if you often have people coming to you for advice, you should try to make as much time for them as possible. These people will be your biggest advocates in the future!

It’s also important to look at, in terms of commenting with your name and brand, to look at the comment form carefully and utilize things like the KeywordLuv options. It makes you look less spammy too if you are following the rules, unless you have one name as your keyword, in which case it doesn’t matter.

    Hi Simon,

I enjoyed the post. Excellent ideas. One thing that I am doing to stand out from the crowd is using multimedia.

I use videos and have just launched my very first podcast. Multimedia adds another level of trust to your blog readers.

  23. Hi Selwa,

I totally agree with you on the point of making yourself stand out by guest posting. It not only makes a difference to your image, but you can leverage each other’s readership and provide more value for other readers.

I think people want to hear a strong voice and want variety, so it definitely helps to have both guest posts and your unique style in a blog.

Personally I still like to pick up the phone and contact bloggers and say hello as well to build up a presence in the community. The blog is a great way to express and contribute and share, but I think we shouldn’t also forget the human factor as well.

Great post and keep up the great work. I love your blog design as well!

  24. Internet marketing has good scope. It is growing slowing but have good future. Very valuable information in your post. It can increase traffic on your site and give good response.

  25. Rob from DoylesRoom Poker Rakeback says:

Guest posting…What an awesome idea! I absolutely love writing and would take great pleasure in this. I actually just recently joined the blogging community myself. I of course have a certain subject that I am most passionate about, but in browsing through other people’s blogs I have discovered a world of interesting subjects that seem to always leave me with something to say when I am done reading.

I do have a quick question for you. When you do “guest posting,” do you always write unique articles from scratch for each site, or do you sometime re-use articles you’ve previously posted elsewhere or alter your previous articles a bit before reposting? I ask because if you have a well written article on an important subject, more viewers would certainly benefit due to a wider distribution of the article… but I don’t know if that’s considered unethical in some form, and would not want to offend the kind bloggers who may allow me to “guest post.”

    • It really depends on the blog you’re guest posting on, but 99.9% of the time you’ll have to write an article from scratch. That said, it really is worth it, especially if you can guest post on a large blog where you’ll get loads of exposure.

Take my guest post here on Blogriffic for example. It was well worth the amount of time I spent writing the article as I got some really great exposure for my website, and got a few new readers too.
