Traffic Monday: How to Choose the Right Article Title for Your Article Topic

When browsing the internet for information, you will often find yourself drowning in a sea of articles discussing on the same topics. Sometimes you just don’t know which to click and yet you don’t want to waste your time opening a link that will not give you what you need.

As a researcher, I have experienced being bombarded with the same dilemma. To resolve this, what I usually do is choose the titles that seem to be well thought out and completely ignore the ones that fail to get my attention. God knows I made the right decision! The better titles are indeed the ones that lead me to the contents that I wanted. When I tried to check the dull ones, I did found the articles lacking in substance.

You’ll know if an author has put an effort on the article by just reading the titles. Just think about it-if you are to choose between two articles, which one will you read: “Guitar Ear Training” or “Playing by the Ear: Guide to Become the Next Guitar Legend”? Tell us that the first one was able to grab your attention more than the latter and I’ll immediately go for an early retirement.

The internet is a very competitive arena. Chances are, dozens of writers have already written on the same topic as yours. The quality of their works is probably at par with yours as well. If that is the case, you have to do everything to keep yourself ahead of the game with titles that are sure to get the readers curiousity. However, it doesn’t mean that you should lure the readers into something that you can’t really provide. Never ever try to deceive them with a title that does not encompass what you have written. Do that and you’ll lose their trust as quick as how you were able to get them reading you.

Getting Started with a Working Title

Authors often begin writing with a working title to keep them from going astray from the topic. Nonetheless, you should not be restricted by working titles. If you are able to construct additional ideas while writing, you may add so and simply change the title into something that will encompass the brand new subject.

Other than that, considerations have to be given to tone, style and target niche. If it so happened that the working title does not seem to fit the general ambiance of the article, it is always best to modify. If possible, incubate the article for a few hours before giving it the final title. Authors do this to detach themselves from the article and to give it a fresher, more objective perspective. By doing so, they get to determine the main idea and key phrases. That’s exactly what you should use in the title.

Style

Aside from letting the readers know what the article is all about, the role of the title is to set up the mood or the tone of the article. When you see a text entitled “Creative Writing Tips”, you expect to read practical and straightforward application of creative writing in real life situations. An article that discuss on the same topic can assume the title, “Write to Impress!” but reads differently. With the title alone, readers get to anticipate if they need to absorb the information seriously or if they should just have fun reading the article.

If you are writing a how-to article, try a title that sounds more straightforward. The readers expect information from you so you really don’t need to embellish the title (and the whole article, for that matter) with fancy words. Say what the target readers need to know and they will be more than glad with that. Most do-it-yourself websites and magazines have simple and straight to the point titles that usually begin with “How to…” That’s should be more than enough.

Otherwise, if you are writing a personal essay or a blog entry, you have the poetic license to play around your title. Be as creative as you can but still, the readers have to know what to expect from the article. You don’t need to write a formal title if what you have written sounds conversational and fun to read. Use your imagination. You can write short or long titles, provoke your readers with a strong statement or a mind-boggling question, use a rhyme, quotation or a pun-you have endless possibilities.

Again and again, the only thing you have to focus on is the needs of your readers. You must not deceive them into reading your articles. Instead, try to help them decide if the information you offer is what they are looking for.

    Excellent tips Salwa!

And you are so right, so many people already have written on the same topics so it is important I think to show readers that you have something different to offer on the same topic.

And personally I do start with working titles and many times they do morph and change as the article lays itself out in the end.

    Thanks again!

    Hey Salwa, great article.

I totally agree about the incubation period. It really does help you nut through not only some of the finer points of the article, but importantly, the title of the article itself.

I find I can change my mind two or three times before settling lately.

Also, oddly enough, when I try to jazz up article titles too much, that’s when they don’t have as much success. Regardless of the quality of the content.

So I guess the lesson for me is to be concise :)

    Cheers!

      Josh,

I have been through same thing number of times before but what i have now come to realise is just don’t over do it. Try and find something cathy, that will make someone wanting to read your article (without deceive them of course!) but just try not to over do it that it become too much!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, it is much appreciated!

    Hey Salwa,

Great post here. Most of the titles we see today are rather bland. They need to spur some excitement, push us over the cliff, entertain us, irritate us, intrigue us or at least inform us.

    Will keep reading.

@Salwa… you tried to elaborate the topic with reader’s aspect, but as a writer I think you should try to include one keyword in your topic. It will help to gain the upper position in google search.

All other suggestions are really useful. Thanks.

Wow, you are great Salwa, always find the good word at the right time. I tend to use basic title for my content. Maybe I am lacking of good idea. I spend a lot of time writing my contend, but often lacking idea for a catchy title. I don’t mean I always use worhtless title, but sometimes I feel there’s no need for taking much time thinking for a catchy title and use a basic one. I feel like many blog are talking about the same subject, I haven’t seen a blog writing about very new things as whenever something happen, many people are talking about the same topics. It’s just the way they write it that make it different. So unless the main topic of your blog is very different that people use to write about, you’ll have to choose a great title that attract your readers! :) thank you for the great advice anyway.

Titles are truly the crux of any article and is therefore important that they capture the eye and imagination of the reader. Finding the right title is not an easy task and you will never please everybody. Dwelling too much on a title may inadvertently distract you from the article itself. I usually have a title that I write the post around but I may actually change it once the post is completed.

That’s right! Provide a question if you already have an answer! A question as a title is a good way to start a topic.

  17. Héctor from SEO and Blogging says:

Generally speaking, a great title often leads people into following your link and read what you have to say so taking time to develop an enticing one is a must.

One blogging habit of mine is to start all my blog posts by writing the title first. This help me in two different ways:

When I start by writing the post and not the heading first, I often find myself without any energy left to craft a great title. All my creative juice gets dried up while writing the article. However, when I start by the title, generally this doesn’t happen.
I can develop my entire post from the idea expressed on the title, which helps me keep the contents well-structured.

I know this is a bit off-topic, however I thought that it’d be nice to share this tip with you and your great audience :)

    • salwa says:

      Hi Hector,

No not really, it’s not an off-topic at all :) . Infact very relevant. I often do that as well. Start by writing the title first but again sometime I will change it once the post is completed if i feel the need to do so.

Thanks for linking to your article.

  22. Luis from Marketing Business Review says:

    Hi Salwa,

I think it could be helpful if you just write the Title after you finish the post then you know what was at the end and avoid to be changing the Title when topic could change every minute.

Actually it could be wise too to use a permalink Title rich in keywords and the Title for your readers, and may avoid to worry of SEO.

  23. Hi Salwa,

Thanks for the post. I really agree with you when it comes to choosing which article to read its hard. There are so many out there related on same topic that it becomes confusing.

I believe that title only helps you to grab the initial attention but the main thing is content. If content is not informative and not interesting to read then people will just walk out of your blog.

Thank for the tips. It really helps. Overall nice post.
