Traffic Monday: How twitter can help you drive targeted traffic to your website

Just in case you have never heard of twitter; it is a social media site that instantaneously took off and gained popularity from the first “tweet”. You can choose to follow people (and hope that they follow you back) by searching by keywords. For instance, an internet marketer would probably search for friends by finding those who have tweeted about internet marketing or working at home, or something similar. It’s very addictive and many people have more than one account. One account is usually used for business and the other for friends and family.

With the many twitter applications available you can basically zoom in on your target customers or readers just by getting to know your way around. Remember that others are searching based on keywords as well so the more you tweet your “keywords” the more interested people you will likely get who want to follow you. However, being a social site there are some spoken and unspoken rules in the community. If you want the number of followers (hence, more traffic) then you must interact within the community. Here are some ways twitter can help you drive targeted traffic to your website.

Branding: Establish yourself as an expert, but do it in a friendly way. Tweet casually for a while before you start tossing the link to your website out there. Recommend other sites of interest to your niche. By doing this your followers will begin to associate you with your niche and will be eager to visit your website. After all-you’re the expert!

Tweet carefully: You have 140 characters to make your point. Be witty, informative and helpful and more and more people will begin to go to your website. Again, use your keywords as much as possible but not in every tweet. People recognize an advertisement so you will have to be clever slipping the link in there.

Community: As strange as it sounds, the more helpful you are (including recommending other blogs and websites) the more people will trust you and know you are not just a tweeting sales pitch. Again, when people trust you they are more apt to find out what your website is all about.

Followers and Following: There are different theories on this but basically every follower you have is a potential visitor to your website. If you want to know how twitter can drive targeted traffic to your website then you will need to know that you cannot be too selective on who you follow back. Obviously there are some that you just know will have no mutual interest but basically every follower is a potential customer. People know who follows them back and who doesn’t (there is a twitter application for that too) so some will eventually quit following you if you do not follow back.

The reason Twitter continues to grow in numbers is that for personal use, it’s fun and for business use, it’s profitable. It has been proven time and time again that you can gain traffic via twitter. Just like in real time, people on social media sites tend to form some cliques but generally everyone communicates with everyone else. There are some people who may be following you that you don’t hear from for a week and then suddenly, they are asking you a question. This type of interaction is how twitter drives targeted traffic to your website. When they have a question, they know who to ask.

If you are already on twitter but not as an “expert” in your field then you may want to start a business account. You can send some of your follower’s messages to follow you under your business account. If you have not yet started a twitter account, it is best to join, follow a few people and then just watch the interaction for a while. Be fairly quiet at first but interact. There is a knack to learning to twitter in a way that will drive traffic to your site. Once you learn that, you will be able to drive tons of traffic to your website.

Looks like everyone is trying to market their blog/website through twitter. I am really not into this twitter thingy, but guess now I see the potential in tweeting.

Lithium, i know what you mean. for the longest time the thing was being screwy and not letting me stop following martha stewart for some reason, and went from thinking twitter was worthless to thinking that it was annoying and worthless. anyway, so far the main appeal is really just the marketing side, and also just to see what people are talking about in general by checking the most tweeted stuff.

Some of the best advice out there. far too many fail because they are way to self centered and then blame it on twitter.

      Very true Dennis,

Sometimes before blaming on something, think about it first as to why is that or better yet why it works on mijority of people and not me

Salwa, I think you forgot about powerful #followfriday hashtag. Believe me, it has potential of adding at least 50 followers on friday (hence more traffic) if used smartly.

Also recently I wrote a guest article at DailyBlogTips on building traffic http://bit.ly/uqrf6 . Hope your readers will find that useful too.

It’s a good idea to find top Twitter users in your field and see how they go about using Twitter. Do they share more than they advertise? Do they participate in the Twitter trends? Do they reply back to people who ask questions? Do they follow lots of people?

I really enjoy your “Traffic Monday” articles Salwa!

That said, Twitter is a great source of traffic, if you use it correctly. I’m not sure that Twitter should be your main focus on building traffic, but it’s helpful none-the-less.

I am realy unhappy on how Twitter has changed/evolved over the past couple of months. Twitter was meant to be a microblogging site where people interact/share their views. But now it has just become a hub for Internet marketing, spam, scam etc

Rajus last blog post..Top 5 Ways to Exclude Posts from Your WordPress RSS Feed

    • salwa says:

      Raju,

You are right, twitter has indeed become a centre of spammers, and scams but still for just normal people while interacting and sharing views with with other twitter users and making new friends along the way, it can be a great tool for networking and turning those people to wanting to visit your website or blog.

  13. Very useful tips Salwa. I agree with this “Tweet casually for a while before you start tossing the link to your website out there.”. In any social networking sites if you with an intention of just drawing traffic for your blog the it will never work. First we should learn to give the readers useful informations and continuing that will automatically bring traffic and readers for your site. The bottom line is the we should never let the readers get the feeling that we are self centric :) .

    Overll a good post Salwa.

    Cheers

Great article as usual Salwa. I tend to promote my last blog post in almost each tweet, I should start tweeting about different things. My twitter follower increased when I was writting update about my blog, now I’ll try to use twitter to introduce the products I’m going to promote. Twitter has a lot of potencial, and I have no hard time believing that it could make you get a 6 figures income in the years to come. Just need a good strategy and have ingenious idea :)

I am already using the twitters but i never got much traffic from there.I dont have many followers also.i will try to get more followers to get more traffic.

    • Benjamin Cip says:

Even thought I only have 130 followers, this number increased depending on what I tweet. I’m very satisfied with this small number because I only started blogging recently. I advice you to follow the top blogger to get more followers. Also try to tweet something valuable for the people so that they will be interested in following you. You should think about what you like in other twitter account to improve your own twitter account.

Great write-up about Twitter Salwa. I resisted it, but finally bit the bullet a few weeks ago and I must say I love it! It is fun and easy and allows me to quickly share so many things with people.

I have not done any techniques though to get people to follow, I am kind of hoping it grows organically, that way I hopefully get more readers who really are interested in what I have to say.

      Hi Evita,

I like your plan, rather than having thousands of followers who are non responsive, it’s better to have few who are really interested in you and what you have to say.

Thanks for taking time to comment, as always it is much appreciated.

  17. For some reason I am following all those who follow me in twitter automatically. I dont what I did but this is happening on its own. Is there any way I can stop this? Is this something to do with the settings?

  36. I believe twitter is one of the best internet marketing medium nowadays. A lot of people are using this for personal and business purposes. One thing I know why they prefer this, is that it is easy to use and it is one of the hottest marketing tool now. But if we are going to use this, we need to make it interesting, funky and cool. Tweets should be informative too.
