After launching a new site and getting it listed with the major search engines many website owners think their work is done. In reality the work is just beginning. To have a successful website with a good deal of unique traffic website owners must work around the clock to improve their search engine ranking. Improving search engine ranking will increase the likelihood of your website being noticed by individuals with an interest in your product or services. Higher search engine ranking will also give your website more credibility since most website users realize that getting to the top of the search engine listings is not something that happens to fly by night companies.
There are many search engine tips that are recommended for improving search engine rankings. It is important to understand that these methods are constantly changing in order to keep up with the latest search engine upgrades and changes with Internet software and usability. Keeping up with the latest search engine optimization methods and paying attention to current tips and tricks for improving search engine ranking will help increase your chances for success.
One way to improve your search engine ranking is to constantly update your websites content. Many website owners have a hard time keeping up with their everyday business and they have no time to sit down and work on their site each day. This is understandable and changing your website each day is not necessary for search engine ranking improvement but updating at least once or twice a week is a must.
For those website owners that are not experienced at or comfortable with editing their website on a weekly basis adding a blog to your website is something you should add to you’re to do list. Many website owners that do not have technical skills have fallen in love with blogs.
Free blogging platforms like WordPress can be uploaded to a sub domain on your website and linked to your traditional website. Having a blog will let you easily add news and information to your website without having any HTML or web design knowledge or experience. Adding content to your website each day will help increase your search engine rankings and blogs have the added feature of automatically notifying search engines whenever new content is added. Each time you post a blog you are also creating a new page for your website that is linked to your primary domain.
Along with working on adding new content to your website you should also do whatever you can to link to other websites. Having links on high quality websites will increase your own websites credibility which will boast its ranking with search engines. As an added bonus you will be exposing your website to a new audience that will help you increase your websites traffic.
Place links to your website only on websites that have content that is similar to your own. Avoid websites with low quality, poor search engine ranking, or that are nothing but link farms. Associating your website with poor quality websites will only hurt your websites search engine ranking and could result in you loosing hard one search engine status. If you cannot find any quality websites that have content that is relevant to your own website do not be afraid to put your link on other sites. As long as the websites are of high quality and rank well go for it. Just do not go overboard.
Speaking of relevance you might want to give your own website a once over for relevance. Search engines will reduce your search engine ranking if your website has a title, description, or keyword Meta tag that has nothing to do with your website. Make sure you website has relevant keywords that directly relate to the content that is actually found on your website. If your website consists of a lot of images and is made with a program such as Photoshop or Macromedia Flash and does not contain a lot of HTML or text work on it! Even though your website might be beautiful and actually have a lot of relevant information if the search engines cannot crawl through and read the relevant information in text found on your site you will be penalized. Consider adding pages with articles and additional, relevant, text.
Next you should work on getting your website listed with major directories like Yahoo and DMOZ. Getting on these directories can be difficult since editors manually review your site to make sure it is relevant to the directory category you are interested in. This process might seem silly or be a pain but it is worth it. Having your website listed with a major directory will help improve your search engine ranking and it will also help drive traffic to your website. Make sure your website is well designed with good content before submitting it to the search engines or you will get rejected.
Backlinks is another way to improve search engine ranking that many website owners are not aware of. Some people confuse backlinks with linking but in reality they are two different things. Links are usually blatant links pointing your website. Backlinks are more passive links that help increase your websites status on the web and with search engines. Ways to get backlinks include submitting articles to free directories that include links to your website, posting legitimate comment on blogs, and more. Do not spend more than a few hours a day increasing your backlinks. The search engines have an idea of the rate a website should naturally gain backlinks and exceeding their expectations will result in a loss of search engine rank.
Lastly social bookmarking is a great way to increase your search engine ranking naturally and quickly. Many social bookmarking websites like Digg.com and StumbleUpon.com help new website owners increase their search engine ranking while exposing their site to individuals who are interested in what their site has to offer. Another form of social bookmarking that many do not consider is submitting videos to sites like YouTube.com. Submitting videos helps build search engine ranking at a fast rate while increasing the amount of traffic being driven to your website.

Very good piece there, thank you! One thing I’d add is to make sure that if you create a blog, you claim it at Technorati. Their spiders will have trouble finding you if you don’t and Technorati ratings can carry some weight, yet a lot of people forget about them. In my experience new blog pages get indexed far quicker by the search engines than normal webpages – another great reason to have one.
I should have mentioned that once you’ve claimed your blog at Technorati, you need to add them to the update services listings in your admin panel so their bots come running when you make a new post.
In WordPress, you’ll find that under Settings>Writing in your Dashboard at the very bottom of the page. Since I’ve never found a need to use anything else, I don’t know where that would be on other blog platforms though, sorry!
On the subject of DMOZ, don’t hold your breath waiting for your site to appear quickly. The most recent time line I heard for them was six months from submission and that’s only if you’re accepted of course. It’s an important one to get listed on but it’s not worthwhile looking every day to see if you’re there yet. Give it time to get through their system or better yet, consider volunteering some spare time of your own to help them. They’re constantly looking for more staff to help clear the backlog.
