Top 5 Techniques for Internet Marketers

The world of internet marketing is crowded. So many people are pedaling the same products that the typical methods (PPC, SEO, etc) are just too hard. Below you will find what I consider to be the top 5 traffic/lead generating techniques for internet marketers.

1. Participate in forums, mailing lists, etc.

Forums and mailing lists are the most important things for internet marketers, at least in my opinion. Forums are great because they are very targeted, and most forums allow you to have a signature link or two, so it’s essentially free traffic. There are thousands, probably millions of forums out there, so no matter what your niche is, chances are you can find what you are looking for. Just do a quick Google search for forums in your niche, and start posting! Be sure to contribute to the community, and not just spam your links. Throw your link in your signature, and start answering questions, participating in conversations, and contributing valuable information. If you are an active member of the forum you will get much more traffic from your signature link.

Mailing lists are great because they can turn one-time customers in to long-term, repeat customers. Lists are built in many ways, but most often they are built through a squeeze page, product give away, or other incentivized offer. If you plan on building a targeted mailing list, whether it is an email mailing list or a physical mail list, the best way to do it is to give away free products. Write an ebook, give away articles, software – whatever, and keep giving your list free stuff. Then, try to sell them products. Don’t spam them, but an email every few weeks is fine.

2. Run contests.

Contests are powerful to say the least. People love competition, and they love free stuff. Combine the two, and you have a way to generate massive amounts of traffic. What you do with that traffic is up to you, but suffice it to say that the more traffic you get the more money you make.

Contests are usually run on blogs, but they could be run on any site that has some traffic. Run a simple contest with a cash or item prize, and ask entrants to blog about the contest in their own blogs. This brings more entrants, as well as more traffic in general. Also, if the prize is good enough, submit the contest to Digg and other bookmarking sites. Who knows – it could take off!

3. Include a signature in outgoing mail.

Think of how many emails you send daily. Personally, I send about 20-30 a day, and that’s just my personal email. I send an additional 15-25 from my business email. I’m sure you send a lot of emails too, and I’m also sure that you probably aren’t taking advantage of the signature system that most mail clients have. It’s pretty simple – just make a signature and attach it to all outgoing email. Think of it as a forum signature, and go from there.

4. Write and distribute articles, ebooks, etc.

Articles fuel most of the internet marketing world. A single well-written article can potentially bring you hundreds, even thousands of dollars in sales. So, if you’re not already, start writing articles! If you can’t write, hire someone to write for you. It’s pretty simple! As far as getting exposure, submitting the articles to EzineArticles and other directories is a good idea, as those sites are priority sites, so they generally rank higher in the search engines, so they can drive more traffic to your article.

5. Advertise offline.

I know it’s called internet marketing, but that doesn’t mean it has to be ONLY on the internet! The fact is that offline advertising can be very successful if done right. The most important thing to do if you are thinking about advertising offline is to get a great, memorable domain. Try to go for something short and sweet – something that people will remember. Then, simply make business cards, fliers, posters, etc, and put them wherever you can. If you are a big-time affiliate, you could even consider TV or radio ad spots, though I personally have never tried that.

Now lets hear it from you. What techniques you have used to your advantage? What worked, what hasn’t?

I’ve never had any luck with the email signature thing, perhaps I should jazz it up a little. Forum marketing is good but time consuming so I’ve given that a miss. I’ve run a few contests for my game site but even that didn’t give me the result I was looking for.

All the same, just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else. What it could mean is that I did something wrong in the way I promoted it, but I sure ain’t going to admit that in a hurry.

    Hi Salwa,

The fifth tip is probably one of the best. Do you remember the Ski site I created? http://www.gograndbornand.com.

Well most of the advertising has been through word of mouth, business cards, t-shirts, posters, logos on vans etc.

Plus the forums are on of the best ways to promote a site, Le Grand Bornand is famous for paragliding, we submit an article on the paragliding and we can easily get 50 uniques more in one day.

  19. Andrew says:

    Salwa,

These steps would appear to reflect a common sense approach to internet marketing.

I particularly like the comment which you make in your first point about being a contributor, rather than a spammer, in community forums. Spamming gets you nowhere and many members of internet communities despise those who participate in such a community merely for the purpose of flogging a product.

Yes, internet community forums represent a good source of prospective customers, but common etiquette dictates that one seeks to actually contribute to the forum in question, as opposed to merely spamming its participants.

      Andrew,

Spamming is the ultimate mistake that many marketers end up making early on in their marketing endeavors. It may be tempting to spam, but you will never benefit from it, so do not waste your time.

Thanks for your comment, as always it is much appreciated!

  20. I guess I’ve tried all except offline advertising. Somehow I don’t have much confidence with doing so in a small country where I live. I’m sure it would be a lot different in US or Europe. Good tips here.

I think word of mouth marketing in a small country can be far more powerful than in a big one, especially if you blog in that language. You just have to pick the right topic.

  23. Salwa,

Doing these things will help spread your brand, product or site. One of my weaknesses is forum participation- it just doesn’t work out. I’ve been thinking about offline marketing, like getting a hat or shirt with my logo on it, among other things. I have an ebook completed but haven’t released it yet. Thanks for the suggestions.

      Thanks for your comment, appreciated!

    • smashill says:

I don’t think forums should play such a large role in your marketing efforts. Rather build other streams of traffic, as forums tend to be big time killers, just use the ones you already frequent.

But Salwa I have question when your sending emails out to people like you stated in your post I noticed you said you put a signature file on your emails how is this beneficial do they count as backlinks to your website and if they do what happens if the person deletes the email does that backlink in that email get deleted as a backlink to your website do explain.

      Almir,

Glad you enjoyed reading my post. To answer your question. The signature is an extremely powerful thing that says a lot about you as a person and your blog as a part of your business or company, if you are working towards larger goals. It tells readers that you are open to communicate. When you don’t include a message in your signature area, you are much less likely to ever receive contact from someone who may be interested in working with you, advertising on your site, or simply getting in contact with you for any other purpose. Hope my short answer helps you shed some light to this. I will try to put up a post explaining in detail the benefit and advantages of using signatures.
