Traffic Monday: Ways to Increase Traffic

Search engine optimisation has become the savior of corporate blogging. Companies shell out significant amounts just to make sure that their websites are on the top spot of the search engine game. However effective SEO methods are, as proven by the specialists, there are other ways on how to drive traffic to your blog or website without having to send a hefty amount.

Blogging entails planning a good strategy. For one, there is nothing wrong with being meticulous and it would all start in your choice of the right blog software. There are a lot of blog providers out there but you have to prefer the one that has features your needs require. Choosing a blog software that is highly customizable is your best bet. Serious business requires serious attention on your part so it is always good that you get to start from scratch, and do all the concepts by yourself without being boxed up in templates. You also have to choose a CMS that is user-friendly enough for your bloggers. They are the ones who drive traffic by creating quality contents for you. Saving them from the burden brought about by technicalities will help them do what they are good at in its optimum. Picture in your mind how you want the blog to attract traffic for you and use these factors in choosing.

But however good your blog CMS may seem, the worst SEO sin you can do is not to host your blog directly on your very own domain. You already amassed all that traffic through your website, the blog is merely an auxiliary to that and not a wholly separate entity. Doing so will also attract traffic from the blog towards your main website which is even better.

Attracting blog traffic is another critical undertaking. There has to be two things in your mind: the visitors and the search engines. While creating your title, for example, you have to think about something that is snappy but fleeting. Think about a title that does not only attract new visitors-it has to keep them coming back to you for more. Secondly, think: search engine optimisation. People who do not know that your site exists will take refuge in search engines and when they do, your blog just have to be there. To find out, write your title and subtitle and check how they do with various SEO tools available in the internet. With the right knowledge, it is highly possible to do this on your own. After all, if you have nothing to spend, then you better exert more effort to achieve your goals.

Such efforts are after all, fun and exciting. Participating in related forums, blogs, online communities and social networking media is a good way to drive traffic towards your blog, and consequently, to your main website. All you have to do is to inform the Web 2.0 that your company blog exists. This would work wonders especially if you are armed with credibility and a good net-reputation.

In the end, what matters most is the company, the product and the content you endorse. If your blog is worthy of a visit, there is no reason why it would not gain the traffic that it deserves. Just make sure that you have a balance between strategy and quality and the rest would follow.

Nice Article! Completely agree with hosting of blog on your root.
In fact it looks quite amateurish to have something like blog.domain.com or domain.com/blog

    Hi Himanshu,

Thanks for stopping by and i second that with what you are saying. As i have said in my article this is one of the ultimate sin a blogger can commit. Thing is people just won’t take you seriosly so it’s fine if you are just doing it for a hobbie or partime however but if you want proper full control of your blog having your very own domain is a way to go.

  3. Freddie says:

I disagree with Himanshu’s comment above. I don’t think it is amateurish to have your blog at say FreddieTaylor.com/blog.

This is not where my blog is located but there are perfectly good reasons to have your blog it a separate folder under your homepage. And it doesn’t look bad in my opinion.

But Salwa, I don’t think that is what you were referring to. I believe you were saying to host your blog yourself as opposed to blogger.com or WordPress.com.

And I totally agree, there are just far to many reasons and benefits of going this route. Also, it is just far to easy to do not to host it yourself.

I have a friend today that I showed how to do this and he was amazed and yet upset it has taken him this long to start.

Anyway, good stuff and keep it coming!

  4. Salwa says:

Yes what i was reffering here is to host your blog yourself instead to something like blogriffic.blogger.com or wordpress. I did mention about this in detail on my other article The Biggest Mistake Bloggers Make http://www.blogriffic.com/2008/09/23/the-biggest-mistake-bloggers-make/

  6. Nice read. Quality of content is very important for the flow of traffic. There should be a right balance between the quality content and marketing. I find forum marketing and commenting on other blogs as one of the best ways to build traffic on your blog.

  7. You have made a good point here on the need to write for both your readers and search engines yet many are still overlooking on this pointer. At the end, it’s all about quality vs quantity.

Great post. I will give someone a break if they want to get started blogging on a free platform, just to figure out if they have enough to say to sustain a blog, but if they see that they indeed have a lot to say, moving to their own platform really is the only way to go.

    The title thing is important…

It has to appeal to the searcher when they come across it in the results, as well as be very clear in letting the search engine know what the page is about.

    It’s certainly a balancing act!

  12. blinkky says:

I agree with you about having own domain name. Just invest a little bit for a domain. You will never regret…=)

  13. Well talking about CMS, i ever tested 2 kind CMS, there are joomla and wordpress. The first one is joomla, well kinda difficult with installing and setup, and the SEO too very very hard to close to good one. Then the second i tried wordpress and so far wordpress is my popular one. Easy installing and setup and for SEO it really easy too. But i don’t what other opinion. This is only my opinion as now.

  15. SEO is all about getting the right traffic to your site.

Search Engines are a preferred work place simply because they provide continuous long term benefits and results.

Writing high quality content is also a great way to bring continuous long term benefits and results.

Therefore, all SEO work should start by writing a great content!

There’s no need to over think about SEO and human friendly post as two separate elements.

  17. Hi Salwa,

That´s the best way to have your blog, “SelfHosted” there is nothing like it. I had learned that after having some blogspot blogs. Still some use in having some other satellite free blogs, like linking to your main blog and form a net of your own.

BTW, Salwa, I like the new look. Is that your picture? the one in the header banner, lol.

      Luis,

Yeh having a selfhosted blog is a win, win situation and what i have learnt also is many people just won’t take you seriously if you run your blog on one of the free blogs available out there. If your blog is something personal, not business related than cool, fine but if you are running a business blog, worth looking at self hosted ones and by that yes i mean wordpress!

Glad you liked my new look, and I can see “curious, curious” huh? lol. Yeh it is suppose to resemble me :=D

  18. These are good tips. I especially agree that hosting a site on your own domain is the only way to go. Also, WordPress towers above other blog software ;)
