When developing your first website or blog, it can seem overwhelming to try to understand everything. A lot of the information you read seems difficult to comprehend-or at least difficult to implement. And, a great deal about the internet just doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense at first.
One of these difficult items is search engines. Sure, most people understand how to use them fairly well. And you may even be an expert at finding the information you need through on online search engine. But when it comes to your website or blog and getting it ranked on a search engine…well, you may be a little in the dark on this topic.
Chances are, if you are working on your first site or blog, you have probably gone over to google.com or yahoo.com or some other search engine and typed in your site or blog address just to see if it would come up. And, chances are you didn’t see your site or blog address in the search engine results.
There are two reasons for this. For one, it can take new sites and blogs time before they show up on search engines (the exact amount of time depends upon the search engine; however, it can be a few days or a few months).
More important, though, is the second reason. This is because search engines measure links when ranking sites and blogs in their results listings for searches. And, if yours is a new website or blog, you won’t have any links to your site.
See, when search engines do searches, they hunt for links to sites and blogs. The more links you have to your site or blog, the higher your site or blog will be on the results listing. New sites and blogs have no links, so they will not rank.
For example, let’s say you developed a website about kids and video games. You want people to find your website when they search for, say, “kids video games” or “video games for kids.” But, there are already quite a lot of other websites out there on the web that include that topic, and those sites have lots of other sites (links) pointing toward them. The websites with the most pointers (links) toward them will come up at the top when anyone does one of those searches.
Now, if you want your website to come up towards the top of the results listing when anyone searches for “kids video games” or “video games for kids,” you are going to have to do some work to make it happen-it won’t just come about automatically. You need to build some links. You need to make some of those pointers direct toward your site.
By building links, you will be telling the search engines that your site is important. Search engines rank sites based upon the number of links they have-and, you are more important, more worthy of a top spot on the list, if you have a great deal of links.
So, if you want your website to be seen, go build some links!
